What is men's tweed?

At John Crocket, men's tweed covers everything from jackets and suits to waistcoats and caps, through to bow ties and trousers. Every piece follows the same principle: robust wool cloth from British and Irish mills, made into clothing that is worn for years and looks better than it did on the first day. The tailoring (jackets, suits, waistcoats, trousers) is made in Portugal, the caps in Poland.

What makes tweed distinctive as a cloth

Tweed is a coarse wool cloth originally developed in Scotland and the north of England for life in the country. It is wind-resistant, water-repellent, breathable and remarkably hard-wearing. Handle, weight and pattern vary considerably from mill to mill. A Harris Tweed from the Outer Hebrides feels different from a Moon Tweed from Leeds or a Lovat Tweed from the Scottish Borders. These differences are not marketing. They result from different wool qualities, weaving techniques and regional traditions.

The mills behind our cloth

John Crocket sources tweed from several British and Irish mills, along with Harris Tweed. Each has a tradition of its own:

• Harris Tweed from the Outer Hebrides, woven on hand looms and protected by the Orb mark as proof of origin. The roughest tweed in the range, shaped by the Hebridean climate.
• Moon (Abraham Moon & Sons) from Leeds, specialising in tweed since 1837 and generally finer in handle.
• Lovat from the Scottish Borders, with its own weaving tradition and regional character.
• John Hanly from Ireland, with an Irish style and a character of its own.
• Magee from Donegal and Marling & Evans from Huddersfield complete the range.
