Impeccable from head to collar

Shirt lexicon

John Crocket's world of shirts holds the finest fabrics in store for you, in classic colours as well as in striking check or stripe. In doing so, we distinguish between two models and three collar shapes. We have also put together helpful tips on fit and care for you.

Two-fold cotton

The majority of our shirts are woven using the two-fold process. With this fabric you benefit from its durability and shape retention, as well as clear, brilliant colours and a pleasant wearing comfort.

A two-fold cotton thread consists of two particularly tightly twisted cotton fibres. These high-quality threads are woven into the weft and the warp (a vertical and a horizontal thread). The length of the threads makes it lighter and more silky, while the high twist and the double twisting of the yarns provide additional stability. Our fabric carries the quality designation 100/2 x 100/2, which means that a thread of the 100 count is woven two-fold into the weft and the warp. In contrast to standard 115g-130g/m² types, our fabric is lighter, at just 105g-110g/m².

Twisting is possible in counts from 40/2 x 40/2 to 180/2 x 180/2. We have deliberately chosen the 100/2 x 100/2 quality, as it best meets the requirements we set for our shirts. This is also why we avoid, among other things, half-twist yarn, in which only the weft or the warp thread is twisted, as well as a single-twisted 100% cotton fabric.

Poplin

Durable, breathable and exceptionally versatile, that is poplin. This fabric is one of the most common shirting fabrics and you will also find it in abundance in our shirt range. Its special, so-called plain weave, with a denser warp thread and a wider weft thread, makes the shirts easy to wash and iron.

Twill-Check

Twill is the English name for the weave known in German as Köperbindung, and it is known for its fine, diagonally running structure. As with our other shirts, only high-quality cotton fibres are used in the weaving process and woven into robust, hard-wearing fabrics. Twill check gives single-colour shirts a slightly shimmering look. Our colourfully patterned shirts, by contrast, are distinguished by a soft, flannel-like look.

Oxford

We want our Oxford fabric to be firm in the hand, dense in the weave and rustic in texture. This look cannot be produced with the two-fold process, since, as described above, this gives the fabric a silky character. That is why, by way of exception, no two-fold yarn is used for our Oxford fabrics, but rather the special weave of a 50/1 and 30/2 thread. This creates the typical Oxford texture, which appears somewhat heavier, grainier and sportier. A weave with a long tradition.

Shirt models

Our shirts have a longer cut, so that they cannot slip out of the trousers when worn. To improve the fit, the shoulder section is divided (split yoke), which provides a good fit.

Among our models we distinguish between the Classic and the Slimline models. While the Classic shirts have a classic straight cut, the fit of our Slimline shirts is slightly waisted. Which line is the right one for you is therefore not decided solely by your build, but is also a question of personal preference.

There are, however, more precise guidelines when it comes to choosing the sleeve length. If you see an L after the collar size at John Crocket, this denotes a long size. Whether it is right for you is decided by a rule of thumb: from a height of 185cm you should choose a longer sleeve.

Of course there are always variations, but the rule always holds that the shirt cuff should be clearly visible below the jacket. With the arm hanging straight down, the unfastened shirt cuff should cover two-thirds of the back of the hand. The jacket sleeves should reach to the wrist.

The collar shape

Kent

This collar cut gives the tie knot the right position, exactly in the centre of the triangle formed by the collar ends. Even when the top button of the shirt is left casually open on informal occasions. For the elastic (and, of course, removable) collar stays make the collar supple. They create the ideal curve and, even with a loosened tie, prevent the collar points from standing away. If you are looking for the perfect shirt to go with a silk tie and a business suit, congratulations, you have just found it.

As the Kent collar is the classic par excellence, we offer it straight away in both of our lines – Classic and Slimline. Our Classic Kent comes with an elegant double cuff and a breast pocket, while the Slimline model does without both. This makes it superbly suited to casual occasions as well.

Button Down

English sporting style for German cosiness. For the button-down collar is a typically British example of practical clothing. It was invented for polo players. So that the collar ends would not flap into their faces while chasing the ball, the collar points were buttoned down.

The supple character and sportiness of the collar with its buttoned collar ends make this shirt a true all-rounder, whether on relaxed days at the office or at leisure. Even without a tie and with the collar unbuttoned, it always gives you the feeling of being perfectly dressed. The simple cuff with its two buttons goes wonderfully with this casually elegant style. A breast pocket underlines the practical side of the button-down shirt.

Cut-Away

Daring and ingenious was the idea of a men's tailor who boldly reached for the scissors and, with a skilful cut, created what is today the most modern collar shape: the cut-away.

Thanks to its "cut-away", or in other words spread, collar points, the cut-away always looks a little more fashionable than a classic shirt collar, casual and style-conscious at the same time.

The look of the cut-away underlines a dynamic air and shows relaxed elegance. The tie knot is shown off beautifully between the horizontally cut collar points. In keeping with the suit, the cut-away has no breast pocket, but is instead fitted with a double cuff, creating room for elegant cufflinks.

Crafted in the London tradition

At John Crocket, only two-fold cotton is used for shirting, except for Oxford fabrics. Quality is a top priority at John Crocket. Mother-of-pearl buttons are a given, and every step of the manufacturing process is carefully considered, which is particularly evident in the following points.

Collar

The collar is made from two pieces, which means it is not fused. A fused collar is simpler and more cost-effective to manufacture, but it produces a rigid look that makes the collar appear like cardboard. With a two-piece collar, by contrast, a natural fit is achieved through clever cutting. To additionally ensure a perfect fit, our Kent and Cut-Away collars have removable collar stays.

Cuffs

The cuff shown here is the fashion-conscious double cuff, also known as the French cuff. It consists of a double layer of fabric that is folded back towards the wrist and held in place by elegant cufflinks or fabric cufflinks. Evening wear such as the dinner jacket is worn exclusively with a French cuff. We offer our button-down and the Slimline Kent shirt with the simple barrel cuff, which is fastened with two buttons. It is the most popular type of cuff and is ideally suited to casual wear.

Care instructions

You can wash our shirts at 40 degrees. Please note that the shirts shrink slightly after washing. That is why our shirts have one centimetre more at the collar, so that even after washing four or five times it is not too small and still sits comfortably.

In Love with Shirts

There are several compelling arguments in favour of the John Crocket shirt. There is the two-fold cotton, made from double-twisted fibre with a lasting silky sheen. The classic cut is so generous that the shirt always sits impeccably. The Slimline shirt has a slim cut and is a little shorter. And with the variety of patterns and textures, these shirts are really exactly your collar size.
