What is a white dinner jacket and when is it worn?

The white dinner jacket is the white counterpart of the black dinner jacket. Like the dinner suit, it belongs to the black tie dress code, which applies to evening occasions. It first appeared in the 1930s: those holidaying in warm countries wanted to dress formally in the evening without the heavy, dark cloths of evening dress. That is why the white dinner jacket is still the jacket for summer evenings and outdoor celebrations. Only the jacket changes. The black trousers with braid, the dress shirt with a piqué bib, the black silk bow tie and the cummerbund stay the same as with the dinner suit.

Shawl collar or peak lapels

  • Shawl collar. The lapel is rounded. This is how the white dinner jacket was originally cut.
  • Peak lapels. The lapels rise to points that face upwards. This style is considered slightly more formal.

Our dinner jackets come from Wilvorst: single-button jackets with four buttons on each sleeve, in 45% virgin wool and 55% polyester. We order them for you on request, even when you order in the online shop. This adds a few days to the delivery time; you will find the exact details on each product. FAQ

When do you wear a white dinner jacket?
On warm evenings when black tie is required, particularly at outdoor celebrations. This is what the white dinner jacket was created for: a lighter, pale alternative to dark evening dress in warm climates. For all other black tie occasions, the black dinner jacket is the usual choice.
Which trousers go with a dinner jacket?
Black dinner suit trousers with braid, the silk stripe down the side. The waistband should be covered; with a single-breasted dinner jacket, for example, by a cummerbund. You will find the dinner suit trousers in our Dinner Suit collection.
Is the dinner jacket also available in black?
Strictly speaking, every jacket worn for black tie is a dinner jacket, including the black one. At John Crocket, ‘Dinner Jacket’ refers to the white jacket. You will find the black dinner jacket with silk-faced lapels in our Dinner Suit collection.
Can you wear a dinner jacket to a wedding?
Yes, if the invitation says ‘Black Tie’ or its German equivalent, ‘Abendgarderobe’, and the celebration takes place on a warm summer evening, outdoors for instance. If the ceremony takes place during the day, a morning suit is the appropriate dress.
Where can I buy a dinner jacket?
Here in our online shop or at our shop on Friesenstraße in Cologne, where we can advise you in person. We order the dinner jackets from Wilvorst on request, including for orders placed in the online shop. The exact delivery time is shown on each product.
