Brisbane Moss Cord

Brisbane Moss Cord is cord (Corduroy) with a clear rib structure and non-slip character. At John Crocket we use 8-wale cord from Brisbane Moss.

Origin and history

Moss Brothers Limited had been weaving and processing corduroy and moleskin fabrics since the mid-19th century. The company was based in the Calder Valley in Yorkshire, a region with a long weaving tradition.

In 1970, Moss Brothers acquired local velvet and velor fabric manufacturer Brisbane Jones. The company became known as Brisbane Moss Corduroys. In 1983 Brisbane Moss became part of the Chapman Group and started a warehouse-based fabric service. The collaboration was recognized with the Queen’s Award for Export in 2004 and 2012. The award was first presented at the factory and later again by Queen Elizabeth herself at Buckingham Palace. The awards underline the quality of traditional fabrics and global reputation.

Corduroy, 8-wales and quality features

Corduroy, also known as corduroy, is a woven fabric. Traditionally, in corduroy, the weft threads dominate over the warp threads. Visually it appears strong and clearly structured. At John Crocket our corduroy is 100% cotton.

The surface is interrupted by even ribs that run the entire length of the fabric. Before dyeing, the ribs are cut using special machines. This creates the increased pile on the ribs. These ribs are called “Wales”. They shape the character of every cord product.

John Crocket uses 8-wale cord from Brisbane Moss. This means: There are 8 ribs per inch. The number of ribs determines the look and feel.

High-quality corduroy shows even ribs along the entire length of the fabric. The ribs appear clearly defined, without any unsteady areas. The pile is clean and dense, not stained or rubbed off. The fabric feels robust and remains pleasant to the touch. The color effect is also cohesive and harmonious.

Brisbane Moss Cord has met these quality standards for decades and enjoys a global reputation. That's why John Crocket relies on this material.

Sustainability, combination and advice

The next ten years will be about developing textile products without further polluting the environment. Brisbane Moss takes on this task. The company relies on sustainability, organic yarns, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 for dyeing and finishing, factory audits and recycled packaging. The goal remains: We want to reduce our CO₂ footprint and bring new materials onto the market. It even uses yarns that are made locally on traditional Lancashire looms.

Corduroy looks strongest when you combine it confidently. Sweaters in red, light and dark green, including magenta, go well with dark blue corduroy trousers. Corduroy trousers in corn, fawn and dark brown can be combined with tweed fabrics in many ways. Corduroy trousers from Brisbane Moss stand for long life and robustness. This supports the idea of sustainability.

Corduroy care

The care instructions on the label basically read: “dry clean only”. Corduroy fabric made from 100% cotton, like all cotton fabric, shrinks slightly. Hence the note.

If you accept this, you can also clean the corduroy trousers in the washing machine: first at 30 degrees, later at 40 degrees on a gentle cycle. As I said, we do not assume any warranty for this.

It is important that the material is not exposed to high heat. Turn the pants inside out to wash and iron. Do not put them in the tumble dryer. Iron at low temperature if necessary. You can freshen up the pile with steam.
