What makes a good Chelsea boot?
The Chelsea boot is an ankle-high boot without laces. Elastic gussets on both sides of the shaft hold it on the foot, and there is usually a pull tab at the opening to help you put it on. It goes with corduroy trousers as well as grey flannels, and can also be worn with a dark suit.
What to look for when buying
- An understated upper. For a formal look, choose plain Chelsea boots without broguing and with few visible seams.
- A snug fit. The gusset has to let your foot through as you pull the boot on. After that, the boot should fit closely enough at the heel and instep to stop your foot sliding forward. New leather gives a little as it is broken in.
- The welt. On Goodyear-welted shoes, the upper, insole and outsole are stitched together by way of a strip of leather running around the shoe. Once the sole is worn down, a cobbler can replace it.
- Cork in the base. A layer of cork lies between the insole and outsole. Over time, your foot presses its own footbed into it.
- Smooth leather or suede. Smooth leather is the more formal choice. Suede is considered more casual, but in a dark shade it also works with a suit.
- Leather sole or rubber sole. The leather sole is the classic option. For rain and wet pavements, a treaded rubber sole is the better choice.
Our Chelsea boots are Goodyear-welted in Spain on a slim-looking last. The upper is vegetable-tanned cowhide from European tanneries, in smooth leather or suede. The lining, sock lining and outsole are leather, and the heel is reinforced with a rubber section.
