What is formal evening wear for men?

Evening wear is formal dress for occasions in the evening. The invitation tells you which form of evening wear is expected. On a German invitation, 'Abendgarderobe' (literally 'evening wear') or 'black tie' calls for a dinner suit; 'große Abendgarderobe' (full evening dress) or 'white tie' calls for a tailcoat, the most formal evening dress for men. Formal daytime occasions have a dress code of their own: morning dress, worn with a morning coat. Traditionally, around 6 pm is regarded as the dividing line between day and evening.

The dress codes at a glance

  • Black tie: the dinner suit. A jacket with silk-faced lapels, trousers with a side braid, a white dress shirt with a piqué front, a black silk bow tie and a cummerbund.
  • Black tie on warm evenings: the white dinner jacket. The white jacket replaces the black dinner jacket. Trousers, shirt, bow tie and cummerbund stay the same.
  • White tie: the tailcoat. A tailcoat, trousers with a side braid, a dress shirt with a wing collar, dress studs, a piqué waistcoat and a white cotton bow tie.
  • For the day: the morning coat. A coat with fronts cut away into tails at the back, worn with a waistcoat, striped morning trousers and a tie instead of a bow tie.

A dinner suit, white dinner jacket or tailcoat is worn with black shoes without broguing, most formally a plain Oxford in high-shine leather. With a morning coat, black Oxfords are usual.

FAQ

What does 'Abendgarderobe' mean on an invitation?
If the invitation simply says 'Abendgarderobe' (evening wear), the host expects men to wear a dinner suit. This corresponds to the English 'black tie'. If it says 'große Abendgarderobe' (full evening dress), a tailcoat is meant. A dark suit is not enough in either case, as it belongs to a separate, less formal dress code.
What is the difference between black tie and white tie?
White tie is more formal. Black tie calls for a dinner suit, white tie for a tailcoat. Both dress codes are named after the bow tie: a black silk bow tie goes with the dinner suit, and a white cotton bow tie goes with the tailcoat. You will find everything that goes with each in our dinner suit and tailcoat collections.
Dinner suit or tailcoat: which is more formal?
The tailcoat. It is the most formal evening wear and is only required when the invitation says 'white tie' or 'große Abendgarderobe'. The dinner jacket came about alongside the tailcoat as a shorter, more comfortable evening jacket, and today the dinner suit is what is worn for black tie.
Is the morning coat part of evening wear?
No, the morning coat is formal daywear. It is traditionally worn until about 6 pm, for example at morning weddings. We include it in this collection because it belongs to the same formal wardrobe. If the celebration takes place in the evening, a dinner suit or tailcoat is the right choice.
Which formal wear is right for a wedding?
The couple set the dress code, and it is usually stated on the invitation. For 'black tie' (on German invitations, 'Abendgarderobe'), wear a dinner suit; for 'white tie', a tailcoat. If the ceremony takes place during the day, a morning coat is usual. As a guest, keep to the requested dress code and do not dress more formally than it asks.
