WHAT IS MARLING & EVANS TWEED?
Marling & Evans was founded as far back as the 16th century and quickly developed into one of the most important manufacturing centres in the West of England. As early as the 18th century, distinguished gentlemen wore Marling & Evans tweed. The present-day mill, which operates entirely vertically, was built in the 19th century, meaning all production steps take place on a single level, in sequence. Located in the heart of Huddersfield, which must be regarded as the centre of Yorkshire's textile industry, Marling & Evans is a modern, highly innovative weaving mill that continues to produce classic tweed, but with a difference.
THE NATURAL STORY
Marling & Evans weave tweed without dyeing it. Inspired by the desire to produce tweed without any environmental impact, they developed a process for weaving colours and textures into the fabric. By blending various wools of different colours, they create unique patterns. They use the black and white of the spotted coat of the Jacob sheep and the deep black of the Welsh Black. The greatest variety of colour, however, comes from the Shetland sheep: black, brown, grey melange and beige melange – to name just a few.
The tweed wool is never chemically treated or dyed. Only natural soap is used in the finishing process. Not only is Marling & Evans tweed particularly sustainable due to its durability, but its manufacturing also meets increasingly important environmental criteria.
