What is John Hanly Tweed?
John Hanly is one of Ireland's oldest weaving mills. It was founded by Denis Hanly and his son in an area called Ballyartella, on the banks of the River Nenagh in County Tipperary.
Farmers from the surrounding countryside brought the Hanlys their sheep's wool, which was then spun, woven, and washed in the soft waters of the river. In 1952, a fire destroyed four of the mill's six floors. Afterwards, the Hanlys decided to concentrate exclusively on weaving fabrics.
Today, Brian Hanly, the fourth generation of the family, runs the mill and produces tweed inspired by the beautiful landscape of southern County Munster. In the far south, between Kildare and Killarney, this landscape is shaped by the Gulf Stream and features almost tropical vegetation.
Further north you will find the endless beaches of Dingle Bay and the river and lake landscape along the Shannon and its estuary near Limerick.
John Hanly uses only natural fibres. Wool and cashmere are sourced exclusively from suppliers that produce sustainably. Just as it has for more than a hundred years, the water of the River Nenagh drives the turbine that sustainably powers the entire mill.
