WHAT IS MAGEE TWEED?
Magee 1866 represents the combination of Irish tradition and modern design. Magee has been committed to sustainability for 150 years: Magee has always worked with renewable energy and biodegradable materials. These materials are sustainable simply because they last for a very long time.
Magee is particularly known for its bright and colourful tweed fabrics. These include not only heavy, traditional fabrics, but now also modern and more luxurious textures. These fabrics can be used to create elegant, high-quality coats as well as trendy jackets, waistcoats and accessories.
THE MAGEE TWEED STORY
The Magee story began in 1860, when John Magee first offered his handwoven tweed fabrics at the Aldara Market in County Donegal. Donegal Tweed is a virgin wool known for its sometimes coarse textures, such as salt and pepper or herringbone. Magee is inspired by the barren coastline and landscapes of County Donegal. This iconic fabric remains the mainstay of Magee Weaving to this day. Over the course of the 20th century, Magee evolved from handlooms to fully automated looms.
Today, it is the largest weaving mill in northwest Ireland and is closely linked to the traditions of County Donegal. As early as the 19th century, John Magee opened a tweed shop in Donegal Town. This first shop still stands on the same site today. John's great-nephew, born above this shop in 1913, took over the management of the business in 1930. The company is now run by the fourth and fifth generations.
