The name Lovat Tweed lives up to its promise – like every original from the British Isles, Lovat Tweed is a lifelong companion. But that's not the only way you can tell that Lovat is thinking ahead. Every fabric at the Lovat Mill is sustainably produced from natural, biodegradable, pure new wool.

The term tweed may have its origins in the River Tweed, which rises near Tweedsmuir and flows through the Scottish Borders region. It was here that London society primarily went hunting, dressed in tweed. Another origin may lie in Commercial Road in Hawick, just a few metres from today's Lovat Mill. For that is where the weaver William Watson was based, who in 1826 labelled a shipment to a London cloth merchant as "tweels", the Scottish dialect word for twill.

Londoners misinterpreted the word as "tweed" because they weren't familiar with the harsh and strong Scottish dialect. William Watson chose not to correct this error, as his orders for tweed fabric quickly filled up. The Lovat Mill carries on William Watson's legacy by continuing to produce this unique fabric into the 21st century.
