The pocket square is the quiet counterpart to the tie: an accent in the chest pocket that rounds off an outfit without pushing itself to the fore. At John Crocket, the pocket squares are made of 100 per cent silk.

The range covers paisley, floral patterns, medallions and plain squares. Many pick up the patterns of the ties and bow ties, so square and tie can be matched or deliberately set against each other. With patterned ties, a plain square often looks calmer than a second pattern.

Dry-clean a silk pocket square and do not put it in the washing machine. Fold or roll it loosely for storage so the weave does not develop hard creases.

For a formal look, the straight edge works well: fold the square twice into a narrow strip and tuck it into the breast pocket with the straight top edge showing. The loose puff looks more relaxed, where the square is gripped in the middle, gently gathered and tucked in with the points facing down.

How do I care for a silk pocket square?

Silk does not belong in the washing machine. Have stains dry-cleaned and store the square loosely folded or rolled so that no hard creases form.
