What makes good corduroy trousers?

Corduroy is a cotton fabric with a cut pile. The ribs, known as wales, are cut open after weaving and stand on the ground weave as soft ridges. This makes the fabric warm, tactile and hard-wearing: dressier than jeans, more relaxed than flannel trousers, and so the natural choice of trousers for autumn and winter.

Good corduroy is 100% cotton. Added elastane makes the fabric stretchy, but the fibre ages: washing, wear and time tire it, and the fabric loses its shape. Pure cotton has no such expiry date. Density matters too: tightly woven corduroy lasts longer and becomes softer with wear. Check the pile with your hand and against the light. It should stand evenly, with a fine sheen and no patchy areas. Wide-wale corduroy has few, wide ribs and a pronounced relief; needlecord has many narrow ribs and a finer surface. For trousers, wide-wale corduroy is the classic choice.

Construction: what matters on the inside

The inside shows whether a pair of trousers is well made. These features distinguish a carefully made pair from a basic one:

  • Split waistband with extra fabric. The waistband is split at the back, with extra fabric in the seam. This allows a tailor to let the trousers out or take them in by about one size. With a continuous waistband, this is hardly possible.
  • Waistband lining. A separate lining is set in on the inside and covers the seams. On jeans, by contrast, the waistband is simply a folded strip of the outer fabric.
  • Sewn-in belt loops. The loops are sewn into the waistband at the bottom, not just stitched on top.
  • Zip into the waistband. It does not end below the waistband but runs into it.
  • Crotch lining. Cotton is set in on the inside where the seams take the most strain.
  • Cut with the nap. All pieces lie with the pile running in the same direction. Otherwise the trouser legs catch the light differently.

Our corduroy trousers are made from Brisbane Moss 8-wale heavy corduroy: 100% cotton, 460 g/m², Made in Portugal. They have all the features listed above, plus a pleat, turn-ups, two slanted side pockets and a mid rise. They come in a classic cut in short, regular and long sizes.

FAQ

What does “8 wale” mean in corduroy?
“Wale” refers to the number of ribs per inch across the fabric: 8-wale means 8 ribs to the inch. This is classic wide-wale corduroy, visibly textured and robust to the touch. It has a distinctive look and is easy to combine.
Is 460 g/m² heavy or normal?
At 460 g/m², the fabric is clearly in the heavy range. The weight gives it body, warmth and everyday practicality, especially in autumn and winter and on cool days between seasons. Corduroy is rarely the first choice for high summer.
How is the cut?
A classic cut with a mid rise. The pleat gives more room at the thigh and keeps the line clean. To choose your size, first pick short, regular or long according to your height, then the waist size according to your usual trouser size.
Why a pleat and turn-ups?
Both steady the look: the pleat adds comfort and fit for everyday wear, and the turn-ups add weight at the hem so that the corduroy hangs cleanly, especially with boots or Derbys.
What is the easiest way to wear corduroy trousers?
Smart casual: an Oxford shirt with lambswool or Geelong knitwear and a tweed jacket. Casual: a roll neck or polo-collar knit with boots. For a quieter look, muted colours work with smooth leather shoes; for more texture, combine with knitwear and tweed.
How do I care for wide-wale corduroy without ruining the pile?
Dry-clean or wash gently (follow the label or care instructions), with little friction, turned inside out, and do not tumble dry. After washing, pull back into shape and dry hanging or flat. A soft brush helps to raise the pile evenly again.
Can pressure marks or shiny patches appear?
On corduroy, friction at the seat or around the pockets can cause slight shiny patches. This is typical of the material. Airing, careful brushing and steam (held at a distance) often help to settle the surface.
How do I recognise good corduroy trousers?
By the fabric and the inside. The corduroy should be 100% cotton and tightly woven, with an evenly standing pile. On the inside, look for a split waistband with extra fabric, a waistband lining, sewn-in belt loops and a zip that runs into the waistband.
What is the difference between wide-wale corduroy and needlecord?
The number of ribs: wide-wale corduroy has few, wide ribs per inch; needlecord has many narrow ones. Wide-wale corduroy therefore shows a pronounced relief, needlecord a finer, flatter surface. Wide-wale corduroy is the classic trouser fabric for autumn and winter; needlecord is also often used for shirts.
Can corduroy trousers be altered?
Yes, if they are made for it. The split waistband allows our corduroy trousers to be let out or taken in by about one size. Letting down the turn-ups adds 4 to 6 cm of length.
